Flu Cases In Fayette County Way Down Compared To Last Year

A spokesman with the Fayette County Health Department says flu cases are way down from this same time last year.

Kevin Hall says so far there have been 102 confirmed cases of influenza this season.

“Around mid-March, or the end of March last year we had 291 confirmed cases, that’s almost three times as many.  A lot of it simply has to do with the fact that more people have been getting their flu shots earlier in the season,” Hall said.

Hall says access to the flu vaccine has not been a problem either.

“You can come to the health department, you can go to any pharmacy in town, you can go to a lot of the stores.  It seems like almost every store on every corner has flu shots available and people are getting those.  They’re getting information that the best way to prevent getting the flu is to get the flu shot,” Hall said.

But just because you haven’t gotten sick yet, doesn’t mean you are out of the woods.  Some flu seasons have been known to last well into April.
