Jif Plant Running At Half Capacity After Fire

Emergency crews responded to a fire at the J.M. Smucker Jif peanut butter plant in Lexington Tuesday.

The fire damaged a pair of peanut-roasting machines, but Battalion Chief Joe Best with the Lexington Division of Fire and Emergency says no one was hurt.

Firefighters received the call at about 11:35 Tuesday morning. The two roasters sustained significant damage and will probably remain offline for the foreseeable future, meaning the plant will run at half capacity.

Flames could be seen emerging from the roof, but Best says the fire might have been coming from the vents.
