Public Meeting Set for Fayette Co. Schools' District Facilities Plan

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The public is invited to weigh-in Tuesday on the new district facilities plan for Fayette County Public Schools. Compiled every four years, the plan serves as a roadmap for new construction and renovation.

“So we’re looking on this particular facilities plan at several new schools as well as updating a few others as well as some support areas,” says FCPS Chief Operating Officer Mary Wright.

Two new high schools, a middle school, and three elementary schools are included in the plan. The district has surpassed 40,000 students and is projected to see more growth.

“We already know that we have schools that are crowded. We have a number of portable classrooms in place to help accommodate the students that we have in our current facilities.”

Wright says because of a nickel property tax dedicated specifically to capital improvements within the school district, FCPS has the bonding capacity needed to fund the projects. The 2013 district facilities plan totals nearly $319 million in estimated costs.

The public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday Jan. 29 at 5:30 pm at Fayette County Public Schools’ main office on East Main Street.  The district facilities plan will go before the state Board of Education on February 6th.
