Lexington, KY – The University of Kentucky will unveil its latest medical advance next month, as the region's first hybrid operating room opening its doors. The room merges state-of-the-art imaging technology able to render 3-D pictures of human anatomy in seconds with the latest surgical capabilities to produce a unique operating environment. Dr. Zwischenberger, surgeon-in-chief at UK HealthCare, says the result is a combination of the best ORs in the country.

"We were able to put together a team that was able to go around the country to all the state-of-the-art facilities, all the hybrids that call themselves state-of-the-art. We took notes, took pictures, came back, compared notes, and then we sat down with the designers and the company and came up with the next generation hybrid OR," Zwischenberger says.

UK is also preparing a 42-bed pre-operative and post-anesthesia care unit as well as a family waiting room that keeps family members up to date on what's happening in the operating room.
