Lexington, KY – A review released this morning by the University of Kentucky shows the school making strides in research and outreach programs, but falling behind in graduation and retention rates.

The assessment of the university's strengths and weaknesses came at the request of UK's new president. Eli Capilouto asked a University Review Committee to convene administrators, faculty, staff, and students, to paint a picture of where UK stands - and how it can move forward. The report, which compared UK to 11 other institutions, found that UK awards fewer bachelor's degrees than its peers and also lags behind in retention rates.

"It really calls on the president, the university, and the entire campus to focus on undergraduate education, improving the quality of it, expanding offerings, and improving facilities," UK Spokesman Jay Blanton says.

But the review also highlighted UK's successes. Since 2000, the university has moved up the ranks when it comes to research, with its sponsored research expenditures rivaling Michigan State. UK has also received kudos for its work on community outreach. Extension funding has increased by 26 percent over the past five years. The UK Board of Trustees will meet to discuss the review and chart a course of action this weekend.
