Lexington, KY – A fire at Bluegrass Commons Apartments this afternoon has left a number of students looking for a place to stay tonight.
The fire department received the call around 2:40 Tuesday afternoon. Residents reported smoke in building 165 of Bluegrass Commons, an apartment complex bordering the University of Kentucky campus on Virginia Avenue. Battalion Chief Harold Hoskins said no one was hurt in the blaze.
"They did locate quite a bit of fire in the attic, but we were able to get ahead of it," Hoskins said.
The building appeared to be fully evacuated by the time crews arrived. Alexis Gooch, a UK student living in the complex, said residents responded quickly to the fire, which left the roof on the right side of the building caved in.
"It spread across the whole ceiling, so we hope it didn't get to our apartment but we don't know yet," Gooch said.
Hoskins says four units received heavy damage. Investigators don't yet know the cause of the fire.
