Louisville, KY – A group that promotes pride in Confederate history and civil rights advocates are drawing battle lines over efforts to win approval for Kentucky vehicle license plate displaying images of the Confederate flag and Kentucky native Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president.
The Tennessee-based heritage organization Sons of Confederate Veterans would be able to raise money with the plates. A spokesman for the group's Kentucky division told The Courier-Journal that the plate would also educate the public about the group's existence and promote membership.
But Democratic state Sen. Gerald Neal of Louisville says the symbolism promotes ideology that needs to be left behind.
And the leader of the Louisville branch of the NAACP, Raoul Cunningham, says his group may consider a legal challenge.
Groups applying for special plates have to receive approval for the design and collect 900 prepaid orders within two years.
