LEXINGTON, Ky. – A veterans hospital in Lexington is reportedly notifying patients about unsterilized instruments that may have been used during surgery.
According to a local television report, the VA Medical Center off Cooper Drive mistakenly used medical equipment that could have been contaminated with Hepatitis or HIV. Daryl Baldwin told WKYT that he had cataract surgery in March, but wasn't contacted about the problem until December.
Baldwin has since tested negative for the diseases. An unnamed VA spokesperson in the report said other patients are being notified.
Request for comment by WUKY was not returned Friday. It's not clear how many patients were possibly affected by the unsterilized instruments.
