Fines For Texting While Driving Kick In Jan. 1

By Rick Howlett - Kentucky Public Radio

Louisville, KY – Drivers who violate the new texting law will be fined $25 dollars for the first offense and $50 dollars for each additional offense, plus court costs.

Kentucky State Police Trooper John Hawkins says the new law is designed to keep the driver's focus on the road.

"Fatalities are down across the commonwealth. In fact, we have 41 fewer fatalities this year than at this same time last year. We attribute that success to drivers making better decisions. And not texting while driving is one of those decisions that we expect the drivers to make."

In addition, Hawkins says drivers under 18 are prohibited from using a cell phone for any purpose while driving except to make an emergency call.

The texting law went into effect in July.
