LEXINGTON, Ky. – Lexington Police say an easily preventable crime is on the rise this summer. Officer Bige Towery says in June there were more than 80 reported instances of garage burglary or "garaging."
"Garaging is where individuals travel throughout the city looking for the opportunity to get into a garage through an open door. Once they're in, they're stealing items such as sporting good items, golf clubs, they're looking for tools, they're looking for lawn equipment, and then leaving."
Police say they've seen garaging pop up all over Lexington. Officer Towery encourages homeowners to keep their garage doors closed and locked, even when going inside or on a trip for a short amount of time. He also advises keeping small, easy to carry items out of plain view from your driveway.
