Lawmakers Hear Testimony on Alternative Energy

By Brenna Angel

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – An energy subcommittee of the Kentucky General Assembly continues gathering data on alternative energy sources, like wind and solar power.

Scott Sykes of Genesis Development in Elkhorn City says those who say Kentucky doesn't have enough of a breeze to support wind power are wrong. He suggests putting wind gauges on cell towers to pinpoint possible sites for wind turbines.

"If we can work with the cell industry to start installing one anemometer, one weather station, on each one of those and report that data to Western Kentucky University, we'll at least know what we have."

Sykes says six states on Kentucky's borders - Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia - are already generating wind energy.
