LEXINGTON, Ky. -- – An Indiana man who fled to Kentucky after he was paroled for raping a family member will serve 10 years behind bars for failing to register as a sex offender.
The sentence handed out Tuesday for 38-year-old Michael Wayne Henderson is the stiffest penalty allowed for the crime and the first time it's ever been imposed in the Eastern District of Kentucky.
"Whenever this is issued, and your parole officer meets with you, these conditions are laid out for your point blank," says Kyle Edelen, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. "You know exactly what you're doing so that way he can't come back and say I didn't know this, I didn't know that.'"
Both federal and Kentucky statutes require convicted sex offenders to register with authorities. Police say Henderson stayed in homeless shelters in Frankfort and Lexington using a false name.
