Initially, there was going to be an increased police presence at Covington Catholic High School Tuesday, instead, classes were cancelled over security concerns.
An e-mail from Principal Robert Rowe to parents reads in part: “After meeting with local authorities, we have made the decision to cancel school and be closed on Tuesday, January 22, in order to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff. All activities on campus will be cancelled for the entire day and evening. Students, parents, faculty and staff are not to be on campus for any reason. Please continue to keep the Covington Catholic Community in your prayers.”
Over the weekend, Covington Catholic students were accused of mocking Native Americans after a short video of the two groups coming face to face in DC. More video footage emerged showing what led up to the events and a third group shouting vulgar and harassing comments at both the Covington Catholic students and the Native American group. The students have denied the claims, saying they were caught up in a moment of their own chanting when the drumming began and they joined in.
Initially, the school and the Catholic Diocese of Covington apologized to the Native American captured on video in a stare-down with a Cov Cath student. They condemned the behavior and said students involved would be suspended or expelled. On Monday, Principal Rowe said a third party would be investigating the incident and encouraged students, faculty and staff to report any threats to local authorities.
A rally against racism, organized by a Native American group, is planned for 10 a.m. at the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Covington on Madison Avenue. A rally to support the students was also planned.
