Judge reassesses UK professor's suspension as he awaits investigation results

An embattled University of Kentucky professor is still awaiting the results of university investigation, which had been expected early this week. The university says it will complete the report "very soon," but a federal judge is considering whether the delay amounts to retaliation.

UK took law professor Ramsi Woodcock out of the classroom in July in response to the professor's call for a worldwide invasion of Israel. The school also launched an investigation into Woodcock's comments on Israel in a variety of forums.

But the Lexington Herald-Leader reports UK's deadline to deliver the result has come and gone with no review submitted. Woodcock has also sued the university alleging First Amendment violations.

In response, U.S. District Court Judge Benjamin Beaton says he's weighing whether UK's response could be considered retaliation, how much power the court has in the matter, and at what point personal comments by a state-employed teacher outside of a classroom context can be regulated.

UK spokesman Jay Blanton told the Leader that the last steps of the investigation have taken longer than expected and the final result is forthcoming.

The next hearing on the case is set for November 19.
