Fayette County Board of Education Chair Tyler Murphy narrowly defeated political newcomer Kathy Schiflett in Tuesday’s District 2 school board race, winning by just 39 votes.

With 14,882 votes cast, Murphy and Schiflett each received approximately 44% of the vote, while third-place candidate R.J. Hijalda received 11% (1,697 votes).

Murphy, first elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022, thanked District 2 voters for their support and said he looked forward to continuing his work on behalf of students, staff and families.

The race focused heavily on the district’s financial challenges, including a budget deficit and revelations that FCPS finances had been misstated for more than a decade. Schiflett made financial transparency a central issue in her campaign.

Incumbent Amanda Ferguson defeated Rodney Allen Jackson by 12% in the District 4 race and retained her school board seat.

The results come at a critical time for Fayette County Public Schools as district leaders work to address financial problems and restore public confidence.
