Gov. Andy Beshear says any Kentucky voter who is stopped or intimidated by a federal poll monitor should report the matter to election hotlines.

With the announcement that the US Department of Justice will be sending federal poll monitors to Fayette and Jefferson counties, Beshear took time out of his weekly briefing Thursday to discuss what the monitors can and can't do.

"First, both the Jefferson County Clerk and the Fayette County Clerk denied consent to federal monitors being inside polling locations. They cannot be inside," he said.

They must also remain at least 100 feet from polling entrances and cannot interfere with, block, or question voters. The governor added that voters are under no obligation to speak to them either.

"You can't be stopped. You can't be aggressively questioned. You do not have to talk to these individuals," he said.

If an incident occurs, however, Beshear says voters should call the Kentucky Election Law Hotline at 800-328-8683 or the National Nonpartisan Election Protection Hotline at 866-687-8683.
