The 100-acre public garden became the celebrated gathering spot we know today 40 years ago when the University of Kentucky and the city government established an agreement known as the Arboretum Partnership.
But the big news Thursday was about the Arboretum's future.
"The Arboretum will remain as an Arboretum for at least 100 more years, till 2126," Danny Dunn, trustee of the Bill Gatton Foundation, said to a round of applause.
The Arboretum will remain the Arboretum “for at least another 100 years.” UK announces “transformational” gift to the Arboretum via the Bill Gatton Foundation, which will include a long list of upgrades and new facilities.

Dunn had the honor of unveiling at least six major upgrades and new additions the donation will fund. They include a renovated visitor center, improvements to the walk across Kentucky, enhanced pathways, a reconfigured main entrance with new lighting, and additional off-site operational facilities.
Even with the promise of new opportunities for learning and community events, Mayor Linda Gordon said it's the promise of longevity that resonates with many.
"This is, I think, what many people who know and love this place want, is to understand that for a very long time into the generations to come, it will be the Arboretum," she said.
But as for the newer amenities, design is already underway and the projects are set for completion in 2028.
