Lexington weighs $1,500 penalty for street racing

A proposed anti-street racing ordinance could advance soon in Lexington.

The city council's Social Services and Public Safety Committee held further talks on proposed penalties for street racing Tuesday.

Aaron Mudd with CivicLex said Lexington isn't alone in tackling the issue.

"The proposal comes after complaints from residents and is modeled after a similar ordinance passed in Louisville in 2022," he said.

The committee had considered the ordinance once before, but held off due to worries that the proposed penalties were too harsh.

In its current form, the ordinance would call for a $1,500 civil violation for a first offense -- which could include drifting, burnouts, and doughnuts. As for multiple violations, the city is considering a 60-day vehicle impoundment, along with a $4,500 penalty.

The full council has yet to take up the issue, but that could happen as soon as next week.
