The GOP congressional candidate for Kentucky's 6th District has confirmed he will not be attending President Donald Trump's rally in Northern Kentucky Saturday.

Trump is set to speak at Northern Kentucky University's campus on Saturday as he seeks to shore up support among Republicans in what pollsters suggest could be a challenging midterm cycle.

But according to WHAS11, 6th District candidate Ralph Alvarado —- who appears locked in a tightening race against Democrat Zach Dembo — won't be in attendance. That's despite Trump's endorsement of Alvarado in the primaries.

In a statement, the former state senator's campaign said he has other campaign events scheduled in Montgomery County and longstanding commitments on the day.

Kentucky Democrats quickly accused Alvarado of further distancing himself from the president. Kentucky Democratic Party Chair Colmon Elridge said Alvarado started his campaign as a MAGA-aligned contender and now "he's clearly terrified and he should be."

The Trump rally will be the president's second visit to the state in seven months.
