After months of hospitalization, recovery, and speculation about his condition, McConnell was in Washington this week to cast a decisive vote to overcome Democratic objections to the Farm Bill, a major agriculture and nutrition package traditionally passed every five years.
The Senate was already three years past due on the measure, which expired in 2023 and was extended.
Arkansas Sen. John Bozeman, who chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee, told Spectrum News the Kentucky senator's return was welcome news for his party's efforts to advance the major legislation, which Democrats argue doesn't do enough to support food assistance.
"We're excited that Senator McConnell is back. He's made a special effort to be here. This bill is so important, not only to the state, but also to the country," he said.
McConnell's presence could also give GOP leaders the numbers they need to advance legislation on cryptocurrency regulation and college sports.
In the meantime, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said it's a "good sign" the senator is showing up every day.
"We should expect our senators and our congressmen and women to show up and to show that they have the capacity to represent us, to advocate for us. And so I think we should be watching over the days and the weeks to come and evaluating the condition he is in," Beshear said.
McConnell has been transported in a wheelchair and says he is "still not quite back to 100%" after his prolonged absence.
The senator is set to leave office in January.
