Comer is technically term-limited in the position, but lawmakers have the option of seeking a waiver to continue chairing committees past their term. A spokesperson for the congressman said he will not be doing so.
The House Oversight Committee frequently makes its way into the headlines. During Comer's tenure, the committee concentrated heavily on former President Joe Biden and family, ultimately failing to press criminal charges despite alleging impeachable offenses against the former president.
More recently, the committee heard testimony on the Jeffrey Epstein case, holding former President Bill Clinton and former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton in contempt for declining to testify.
Comer is seeking reelection to his 1st District representative seat, but is also regularly included on the shortlist of potential GOP candidates for Kentucky governor in 2027.
