"Ten years, it seems like yesterday for me and most of our staff. We have grown four times the size we were before we moved to this location when we were on UK's campus," says Kristi Stambaugh.
The director of Aging and Disability Services for the city stands inside the gym and theater in the heart of Lexington's senior facilities, as visitors choose up sides in a round of cornhole nearby.
On an average day, 400 or so seniors come through the doors, with roughly 100 new visitors trying out the offerings every month. Fitness and wellness programs remain the main draw.
For the anniversary, new and old faces are returning as hundreds of pictures marking the center's first decade are on display, not to mention a game of trivia based on the center's history.
But the city is also looking forward.
A new $24 million senior and therapeutic center will combine parks and recreation-style options with activities specially designed for those with special needs. A sample of what's coming: indoor archery, heavy bag work, TRX exercises, and indoor pickleball courts.
"Parks and Recreation is so excited to bring back wheelchair athletics to the city of Lexington," Stambaugh adds.
The new facility will be located at Shillito Park. It's slated to open this fall.
