As the district continues to sort through its troubled finances, the board is already hearing from teachers regarding a new proposal to cut an additional $30,000 life insurance benefit at the end of the year.
In a statement on social media, the Fayette County Education Association described the cut as "unacceptable," adding that the district is "balancing the budget on the backs of employees."
Association head Erica Pennington told Fox56 the news came in a memo on Labor Day.
"People are clearly upset that any benefits are being taken away in a time when people are already nervous about their jobs and... upset with the communication of it that came out on a holiday," she said.
Pennington said the cut and the way employees were notified do little to ease the anxieties at FCPS, which has seen layoffs and other cuts as the district works to put the budget on a solid footing.
District spokesperson Miranda Scully confirmed the FCPS life insurance benefit is set to be eliminated, but all employees will continue to receive $20,000 in state-sponsored life insurance.
The $30,000 policy in question has been a separate benefit provided by FCPS.
