Gilda Walters, elections department manager, says workers must be 18 by Election Day, able to lift 30 pounds and ready for a long day. One other necessary piece is representation. Walters says the 1,100 workers are of "all of different parties, so we need party parity."
The remaining box to check off deals with training.
Walters says, "We train them on an online training, which is fairly new. We started that new in May and it's going really well. Then they also come to an in-person class that's more hands-on and specific to their roles. They train for about an hour and a half to two hours in person, and then they can take their time doing the online one."
Workers do take home a stipend for their efforts that can be as high as $260.
