Fayette County Public Schools is beginning its search for a new superintendent after the school board Monday unanimously accepted Demetrus Liggins’ retirement.
District Chief of Staff Tracy Bruno said during a press briefing on Tuesday that a superintendent screening committee will be formed within 30 days of Liggins departure.
"The chief human resource officer and myself will meet with board leadership in the coming days to discuss the timeline and then the make-up of the screening committee, the nomination process and the election process. We have to have that committee in place by September 17. So we would receive direction from the board and proceed from there," Bruno said. "We do feel good about the timeline because it is pretty early in the school year. Our last superintendent search stared in January and so that really put us under some time constraints but this year we think we can take our time and have a really good process in place."
Acting Superintendent Bill Bradford was named interim superintendent during Monday night’s board meeting. He has not decided whether he will apply for the permanent job.
“We’re only about 12 hours since I’ve been named interim, which I am honored by,” Bradford said.
Bradford said his focus is “providing stability as the district addresses financial challenges” including $20 million in operational cuts and the elimination of 120 positions.
