The city gave its first reading to the bike lane ordinance, which would prohibit stopping, standing, or parking in designated bicycle lanes.
"The proposal comes from Lexington's Street Safety Task Force, which has been looking at ways to make the city's roads safer for different modes of transportation," says CivicLex's Aaron Mudd.
City data show there were more than 205 bicycle collisions involving injuries in Fayette County between 2020 and 2025. Thirteen resulted in serious injuries and nine were fatal.
Under the new rules, violators could face up to a $100 fine.
In the meantime, city leaders have tabled another ordinance meant to rein in street racing. After discussion over whether the proposal was too strict, the Social Services and Public Safety Committee opted to go back to the drawing board with the intention of crafting a revised version for later consideration.
