Lexington activates heat plan

Lexington is activating Phase One of its high-heat plan on Tuesday, as the heat index is expected to reach 95 degrees or higher.

The plan will be in effect from noon Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday.

LexTran will offer free rides to cooling stations for people experiencing homelessness, while outreach teams will distribute water and other supplies throughout the community.

Lexington community centers will also stay open into the early evening, and several cooling stations will be available across the city.

Those locations include Arbor Youth Services, Lexington Rescue Mission, Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, New Life Day Center, New Vista Drop-In Center, Nathaniel Mission and Recovery Café Lexington.

Officials are urging everyone to take precautions, especially older adults, children and people who are more vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Health officials say the best way to beat the heat is to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, take frequent breaks and find air conditioning whenever possible. They also remind people to check on children, older adults and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illness.
