Driven by complaints from residents, the city council is weighing a new rule against street races and other displays of reckless driving.
"This is an ordinance that would prohibit street races and things like burnouts and wheelies. It would also allow law enforcement to impound vehicles and fine owners up to $4,500 in some cases," says Aaron Mudd with CivicLex.
Lexington's proposed policy takes its cues from a similar ordinance passed in Louisville in 2022. The suggested changes will go before the Social Services and Public Safety Committee Tuesday.
In the meantime, the city is also considering a separate proposal meant to keep bike lanes clear.
It would prohibit stopping, standing, or parking in those designated lanes. Mudd says the recommended tightened road rules come in response to accident statistics.
"City data show there were 205 bicycle collisions involving injuries in Fayette County between 2020 and 2025. Thirteen resulted in serious injuries and nine were fatal," he notes.
The proposed ordinance would not apply to buses, rideshares, delivery trucks, and emergency vehicles.
That proposal needs two readings by council before becoming law.
