Known for its meal delivery services, cooking classes, and job training, FoodChain now has a walk-in grocery on West 6th Street. One of the first in line is Lexington Vice Mayor Dan Wu, who's grabbing some snacks.
"I'm kind of a potato chip addict, and these are the brand I've never seen before with flavors I've never seen before," he says, sifting through his basket. "I'm getting a little onigiri from FoodChain, a little soda, I'm going to get some empanadas."
Looking out over the small but bustling grocery — complete with Kentucky-grown produce, pantry staples, and a busy kid's corner — is co-executive director Leandra Forman. She says the mission is a multifaceted one, highlighting local food, sustainability, and access in an underserved part of the city.
"Our grocery store is a space where people can come support the local farmers, support the mission of FoodChain to provide that access, and then creating affordability through our purchasing programs, through SNAP and EBT access," she says.
