Following a tense standoff on Capitol Hill last week, Paul laid out the reasons he believed the infectious disease expert could be held in contempt.
"He was subpoenaed here to testify, refused to answer any questions even after being directed by the chair and being advised of the law requiring him to do so. He has cited a privilege that is unsupported because of his blanket pardon and because he waived the privilege by testifying at the start," the senator said near the conclusion of the hearing.
The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is now slated to hold a vote on the contempt resolution at 830 Thursday morning.
Paul has challenged Fauci's handling of COVID-19 guidance and implicated him in what the senator believes is a cover-up of the virus's origins and dangerous coronavirus research. Fauci has denied the charges and accused the Kentucky lawmaker of wrongly seeking to entrap him in last week's hearing.
Republicans on the committee are likely to vote in favor of the contempt resolution, which Paul said he will deliver to the Justice Department for possible prosecution, according to the Washington Post.
