The most recent statement Kentuckians have received from the senator came on July 12, when McConnell reported progress in his recovery, noting his move from the hospital to a rehabilitation center.
But with a Republican now absent from the Senate for 40 days, frustration and speculation continue to grow. In addition to repeated calls by Gov. Andy Beshear for the senator to connect with news outlets or release video, other big names are weighing in.
Former Illinois Republican Congressman Adam Kenzinger wrote on Threads that "I think the governor of Kentucky has every right and responsibility to either see Mitch or declare the seat vacant."
Speaking with Spectrum News, New York Rep.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said absent more contact with constituents, McConnell should step down.
"If he can't give us an update, he should resign. Absolutely," she said. "I think it's been very clear to people across Kentucky that his update was not sufficient."
CNN commentator Scott Jennings, one of the handful of Republicans who said he spoke with McConnell on the phone during his hospitalization, said Thursday that "a little transparency on the front here would have saved him a whole lot of grief."
Jennings added that he expects another update in the coming days.
