As of Wednesday morning, damage was reported in Gallatin, Owen and Grant counties. NWS crews are surveying those counties and other areas that have reported damage to determine how many tornadoes touched down, estimate peak wind speeds, and assign official tornado ratings from EF-0 to EF-5.
The National Weather Service office in Louisville has confirmed a "large and extremely dangerous" tornado struck Munfordville in Hart County, leaving behind significant structural damage and widespread power outages. Survey teams have also confirmed tornadoes in Grayson, Fairdale, and Jefferson Counties.
Additional damage surveys are planned in Meade, Harrison, and surrounding counties on Wednesday. Meteorologists will compare radar data with reports from the ground to determine if additional tornadoes touched down.
At the height of the storms Tuesday night, thousands of customers were left without electricity, and scattered damage was caused along major transportation corridors, including U.S. Highway 60.
Emergency management officials are asking you to stay clear of downed power lines and damaged areas, and leave roads open for emergency responders. Additional information will be released by the NWS over the next 24 to 48 hours as assessments continue.
