FCPS Interim Chief Financial Officer Kyna Koch had warned that she personally believed the district would probably be closing out its fiscal year underwater.
"I really just still don't know. But there there's a very good chance we could be in a negative situation," she said in May.
Now, the district is confirming that suspicion — with FCPS's acting director of finance saying a budget shortfall is expected after the district crunches the numbers for their fiscal year, which ended June 30.
The question now is: How large will the shortfall be? And that's not likely to be known until September at the earliest.
Still, ending the year in the negative will result in cuts for the current budget, which began July 1.
