On Wednesday, Governor Andy Beshear called on U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell to provide a public update on his health, saying growing concern among Kentuckians has fueled questions about the longtime senator's ability to serve.

Beshear said he sent a letter to McConnell's office requesting an update on the Republican senator's condition after his administration received an increasing number of inquiries from the public. The request follows reports that McConnell was hospitalized on June 14, with few details released by his office since then.

"Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the health and well-being of Sen. McConnell," Beshear said in a statement. He added that a public update would help end speculation and provide information "in a transparent manner, direct from the source."

Beshear said allowing speculation to continue "is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians" and wished McConnell "a safe and speedy recovery."

McConnell's office has released limited information about the senator's condition since his hospitalization.
