The Treasury’s Unclaimed Property team began visiting Kentucky counties this past March, providing on-site assistance to help you look up and file claims for forgotten bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, and insurance policies.
Jim Florence, Director of Unclaimed Property.
"It's a new approach for us to reach out and go to the constituents and residents of Kentucky instead of having them come to Frankfort," Florence said. "It's been very successful. People love coming out and talking, and we hear really great stories. Heartbreaking stories sometimes just at the right time for them to get money."
Florence said the state has $1.2 billion in unclaimed money, and for some, the windfall discovered at these unclaimed property roadshows can be life-changing.
"An individual came in and said, ' Can you help me,' and when we started to look, we saw numbers cha-ching-cha-ching-cha-ching." The total was more than $400thousand. We asked if he fainted. "He did!"
"He thought that he might have, he was thinking about 100 thousand just from reference, but when we started looking at the appreciation that had occurred on those, it made a huge difference for him. He was excited to say the least," said Florence.
While I did not walk away with six figures, Florence found I had just over $55 to collect, which will almost fill up my gas tank.
If you live in Fayette County, the event will be held at the Davis Park Workforce Center on Wednesday, June 24th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
You can search for unclaimed property any time at the Kentucky State Treasury Department.
