Lexington emergency officials are monitoring the forecasts through Thursday as the heat index is set to top out at 95. The heat index combines the temperature and humidity to estimate how hot it will feel.
The result is triggering the first stage of the city's Heat Plan, which involves a number of steps.
Lextran will provide free rides to cooling stations for those experiencing homelessness, while outreach teams distribute supplies. The seven stations span from Arbor Youth Services to Recovery Cafe Lexington.
Community centers — including Castlewood, Dunbar, Kenwick, and Tates Creek — will remain open through early evening.
All residents are being encouraged to take precautions when outdoors through the afternoon hours Thursday, though changing conditions could extend the warning.
