Lexington drivers and pedestrians could face new restrictions when it comes to the use of bicycle lanes.

Lexington recorded 205 bicycle collisions with injuries in Fayette County between 2020 and 2025 — with more than a dozen resulting in serious injuries and nine ending in fatalities.

That's grabbed the attention of local policymakers, who are weighing some changes to what's allowable in designated bicycle lanes.

CivicLex's Aaron Mudd explained what a committee will be discussing this week.

"The measure would make it illegal to stop, stand, or park in designated bicycle lanes with some exceptions for things like buses, ride shares, delivery vehicles, and emergency response," Mudd said.

In 2025 alone, more than 71 cyclist-involved collisions were reported.

The proposal is the product of Lexington's STREEET Safety Task Force following years of concern about cyclist safety in Lexington. The recommendations will get a hearing in the Social Services and Public Safety Committee on Tuesday.
