As AI advances, Lexington city leaders are revisiting policies surrounding the new technology

Artificial intelligence is making its way into some government operations in Lexington and policymakers are working to keep a handle on exactly how it's used.

Lexington city government first crafted artificial intelligence policies back in October 2025. This week, the city council will hear a review of those policies and more on some potential changes.

CivicLex's Aaron Mudd explains what's currently allowed and not allowed, as well as areas where the technology might be introduced.

"Acceptable uses include things like drafting documents, research, data analysis, and other administrative tasks. It also includes some restrictions. Users aren't allowed to input specific customer data, create misleading content, or have (AI) approve transactions on its own," Mudd explains. "The city is also exploring some new uses for the technology, such as AI-assisted review of documents, live language interpretation, and AI agents that can help with residents' requests."

For now, the policy is fairly broad. It applies to city employees, interns, consultants, contractors, and third-party venders.

As for the tech side, the current rules apply to any device, network, or system where the activity involves local government data, systems, or business practices.

One additional area where AI might be put to use is in Code Enforcement. Last month, that department signaled its intent to begin exploring the use of AI to comb through existing data and better zero in on hotspots, where Code Enforcement hopes to take a more proactive approach.
