Following five hours of deliberations by the jury and a nearly month-long high-profile trial, the jury recommended the life sentence in addition to 17 years for non-murder charges to be served concurrently. Factoring in time already served, Gilday would be eligible for parole after 21 years.
On May 21, Gilday was found guilty but mentally ill on all counts in the shooting death of Jordan Morgan during a 2022 home invasion in Madison County. Gilday was convicted of murdering Morgan as he sought access to her father’s underground survival bunker.
Gilday's defense had initially argued for a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict.
Now the case is in the hands of the judge, who will determine the final decision regarding the sentence. WKYT reports that could take several more weeks.
