The new licensing system, meant to update a nearly 40-year-old mainframe, will require all regional offices to close June 4 and 5. Additionally, once-a-month Saturday hours will not take place in June, though offices are doubling up their Saturday offerings during May.
Gov. Andy Beshear had one message for anyone who will need licensing services during the affected times.
"Make sure that, if you need a new license, if you need any services, that you're thinking and planning on your trip," he said Thursday. "Because for those two days the offices will be closed and there will be a change in hours during those other days. But these scheduled changes will help licensing staff transition to the new system."
That new system is meant to cut down on the amount of wait time residents need to spend in the offices, by offering more online options, such as pre-applying for a license permit or ID; ensuring you arrive prepared for an in-person visit, whether requesting a card for the first time or renewing a license; requesting a lost card replacement or change of address; or checking the production status of a card.
"Our goal is that people spend less time in our offices, or don't have to come at all," Beshear said.
After the switchover, walk-in hours will be available from 8 am to 12 pm through June 18 while staff complete training.
