The last Democrat to win the Sixth District favors Zach Dembo. Here's a snapshot of the endorsement leaderboard

Sixth District congressional hopeful Zach Dembo picked up a big name endorsement Wednesday in his campaign to become the Democratic nominee in the fall.

Former Kentucky Rep. Ben Chandler was the last to speak at Dembo's Lexington headquarters before handing the podium over to the former Navy JAG officer and prosecutor.

"Let me turn it over to my friend, who I proudly endorse, Zach Dembo," he said.

Chandler, the last Democrat to hold the seat, praised Dembo as the best shot his party has of winning back the seat Republican Andy Barr has occupied since 2013. Chandler and Dembo described the midterm battle for the U.S. House as a must-win for Democrats.

"He can win this election. It's not going to be easy. This is not an easy seat to win and I can tell you that," Chandler added.

"We have to get across this finish line for the nomination," Dembo said. "We have to nominate a Democrat who can win in November."

Dembo touted a Public Policy Polling survey that showed the Democrat tied 37-37 with Republican frontrunner Ralph Alvarado.

"After hearing more positive information about the biographies of all four candidates, Dembo’s advantage
grows: he leads both Alvarado and (Ryan) Dotson by identical 46-39 margins," the polling firm reported.

Dembo has also nabbed endorsements from former Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, the National Education Association, and the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Meanwhile, fellow Democratic candidate for the seat, former Kentucky House member Cherlynn Stevenson has the backing of former Gov. Paul Patton, Kentucky 120 AFT United, the AFL-CIO, a long list of legislative representatives and senators, and now-gubernatorial candidate Jacqueline Coleman.

"Communities need a fighter who is relentless and will stand up against threats to healthcare," Coleman said last June. "They deserve someone who can tune out all of the politics and division to focus on what really matters."

In the Herald-Leader, Stevenson wrote, "I am the only candidate in this race who has flipped a Republican seat and held it. I am the only candidate who has stood on a legislative floor, debated MAGA Republicans, and delivered real solutions for Kentucky."

Ralph Alvarado campaign

On the Republican side, former state Sen. Ralph Alvarado won the coveted endorsement of President Donald Trump — along with Reps. Hal Rogers and Brett Guthrie and Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers.

Kentucky House member Rep. Ryan Dotson is touting endorsements from Kentucky Right to Life, a host of his colleagues in the General Assembly, and Clays Mill Baptist Pastor Jeff Fugate.
