Gas tax reduction takes effect, average gas price sees slight drop in Kentucky

Associated Press

Gov. Andy Beshear's emergency regulation cutting the state's gas tax went into effect Monday.

Beshear announced the 10 cent cut on May 5, along with several other measures designed to ease the pressure at the pump as prices linger well over $4 a gallon in Kentucky.

The gas tax was set at 26.4 cents per gallon. But according to the Kentucky Department of Revenue, the governor's action has moved the rate down to 15 cents, just slightly more than expected.

According to AAA, the average price of a gallon unleaded gas in Kentucky dropped from $4.40 a week ago to to $4.24 today.

But as Beshear explained, even that modest reduction comes with a cost on the government's side.

"Yes, that will hit our state Road Fund. Yes, that will some county and some city funds, but our choice is to put those dollars in the pockets of our families so they can afford gas, or be able to manage it, which I think we can, as a state," Beshear said.

Road fund dollars are appropriated by the General Assembly for the construction and maintenance of state roads.

Beshear is also freezing a tax rate increase that was set to take effect on July 1.

In the meantime, President Donald Trump has also signaled he will suspend the federal gas tax.
