Fayette school leaders react to 'deeply unacceptable' finance report

School and community leaders are responding to revelations that faulty budget practices dating back 18 years have left the district in worse financial shape than previously assumed.

Fayette school board chair Tyler Murphy and vice chair Amy Green are calling the news of financial misreporting dating back to 2008 "deeply unacceptable," going on to say they are "angry on behalf of every student, family, educator, and taxpayer."

District leaders revealed Thursday that FCPS will need to obtain a short-term loan as a result of the misstated numbers.

Mayor Linda Gorton was also asked about the new financial concerns for a district that's already facing scrutiny over a budget shortfall last year.

"We all believe it's so important for Fayette County Pubic schools to focus on children, what's best for children, and that includes through the budget," she said.

Superintendent Demetrus Liggins described the latest information as "deeply concerning."

Board member Amanda Ferguson accused Liggins of attempting to focus much of the blame on previous district leaders, saying he should take responsibility for the district's financial status.

Fellow board member Penny Christian told the Lexington Herald-Leader the district must “reverse what is apparently almost decades of incompetence and careless performance with as little harm to students as possible.”
