LexPark is pushing for the new fees at the Helix, Courthouse, Short Street, and Transit Center garages.
Richard Young with CivicLex says the reason largely comes down to upkeep.
"Really LexPark is saying that infrastructure in these garages is just aging and needs to be updated. They're expected to invest about $500,000 in the next few years for modernized technology. They're looking at about $11 million worth of maintenance needs that need to be addressed," he says.
As for the prices, short-term garage parking is currently $1 for every 18 minutes up to a maximum of $12 a day.
"The new pricing that they're proposing is $3 for the first 30 minutes and $4 per hour up to a maximum of $19," Young says.
The changes could go into effect anywhere from September to January depending on the garage.
