The Defender Kentucky Three Day Event presented by Mars Equestrian gets underway this week at the Kentucky Horse Park. Our Horse Capital reporter Samantha Lederman has a preview.

This weekend in Lexington will be something of a dream come true for the horse sport enthusiast. Equestrian Events International is hosting the very highest level of competition in both Show-Jumping and Three Day Eventing.

Accordingly, you’ll see the top horses and riders in the world vying for glory over the colored rails and under the lights in the iconic Rolex arena, and galloping around the hallowed grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park as they navigate the cross country course on Saturday.

Three Day Eventing world number one, British rider Harry Meade returns to the Bluegrass this week after placing 3rd and 4th last year. World #2, American Boyd Martin who placed 2nd last year also has two horses entered this weekend, hoping to go one better.

Likewise, the roster for the show-jumping classes reads like a who’s who of that world, with 16 nations represented, including World #2 and defending champion Kent Farmington, fresh off a World Cup win a couple of weeks ago.

Also on site - live music, kids’ entertainment, a huge shopping fair, food trucks and cocktails carts, and obviously you can test drive a brand new Defender over the obstacle course, or let your kids try their hand in the miniature versions!

Competition gets underway Thursday, after all the horses have passed a formal Veterinary Inspection and runs every day through Sunday afternoon. Tickets and more information at kentuckythreedayevent.com
