Kentucky public universities see funding restored to two-year budget

Some Kentucky public universities are breathing a sigh of relief. State funding cuts were largely eliminated from the final state budget.

The University of Kentucky was bracing for a total of $17 million in cuts over the next two years, but most of those funds were restored, according to UK President Eli Capilouto.

Capilouto wrote that general operating funds for UK and other higher education institutions will continue at current levels over the biennium, in a development the president described as "significant and welcomed." He added that the original cuts would have posed "real challenges" to the school's mission.

General funds might be protected, but some capital project funding did get the axe in the final document, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. Those funds include support for a research building at UK.
