FRANKFORT, March. 4 – Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, presents Senate Bill 6, an act related to the endowed research fund, during Wednesday’s Senate Committee on Appropriations and Revenue meeting.

Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers is responding to a Kentucky Supreme Court decision halting impeachment proceedings against a Fayette County judge -- and it's unclear whether the Senate intends to move forward.

The Senate has scheduled its hearing of the impeachment case later this month.

In a statement, Stivers said he is carefully reviewing the implications of the opinion. But he went on to say there have been "longstanding concerns" within the legal community about the conduct at issue. The Manchester Republican said he's heard directly from attorneys who are hesitant to file complaints against judges.

The Senate leaders intentions are left ambiguous, however, with Stivers writing that the chamber's focus remains on "carrying out its duties as outlined in the Constitution of Kentucky."

Fayette Circuit Judge Julie Goodman is at the center of the legal dispute. She was impeached in the Kentucky House over accusations she abused her office, before a Franklin County judge ruled the impeachment petition was insufficient.

The Kentucky high court ruled that state lawmakers cannot continue with the proceedings.
