London mayor indicted over 2022 campaign donations to Beshear, Democrats

London city council

London Mayor Randall Weddle has been indicted on four counts related to campaign contributions to Gov. Andy Beshear's gubernatorial campaign and the Kentucky Democratic Party.

Attorney General Russell Coleman announced Tuesday that a Laurel County Grand Jury had handed down an indictment of four Class D felony counts, alleging Weddle used his personal credit card but reported donations under different names in late December 2022.

The donations in question totaled $18,000 to Beshear's campaign and $75,000 to the KDP, exceeding campaign contribution limits.

Coleman, a Republican, took the unusual step of holding a press conference to announce the indictment Tuesday, adding that, "I'm certainly not here because Mr. Weddle made contributions to a candidate of a different party from me. I'm standing here today announcing this indictment for the people of London, Kentucky."

In a statement to the Courier Journal, Eric Hyers, Beshear's campaign manager, said once they were aware of the excess donations, they proactively alerted the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance. He went on to say he trusts the justice system will determine whether the donations were intentional campaign finance violations by the donor.
