UK Athletics

The fifth-seeded University of Kentucky women’s basketball team (25-10, 8-8 Southeastern Conference) will play one-seeded Texas (33-3, 13-3 SEC) in the NCAA Championship Sweet 16 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, March 28 at 3 p.m. ET on ABC.

Fans in the area can purchase tickets to the game here.

Darren Headrick will have the radio call for UK Sports Network on 630 AM WLAP in Lexington and on 790 AM WKRD in Louisville. It also will be carried on SiriusXM channels 210 and 203, with Danny Reed and Ice Young on the headset.

Big Blue Nation also can watch the game on ABC, with Ryan Ruocco, Rebecca Lobo and Holly Rowe on the call.

The other Sweet 16 game in Kentucky’s region is two-seeded Michigan and three-seeded Louisville, which also is on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

The winner of each game will compete in the Elite Eight on Monday.

Kentucky is competing in its 19th NCAA Championship this March, including its second straight appearance and its second straight appearance under head coach Kenny Brooks.

With wins over 12th-seeded James Madison and fourth-seeded West Virginia in the First and Second Rounds last weekend, Kentucky improved to a 25-18 all-time record in the championship.

This is the program’s seventh all-time appearance in the Sweet 16, boasting a 4-2 mark in those games. The Wildcats also reached the Sweet 16 in 1982, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016.

This March also is Brooks’ 12th appearance – and his sixth straight – in the NCAA Championship.

He has taken three programs to the Big Dance, including James Madison (six times), Virginia Tech (four times) and Kentucky (two times). This is his second appearance in the Sweet 16, while his last trip took him and then one-seeded Virginia Tech all the way to the Final Four in 2023.

Four of his current coaches also were on that Final Four staff, including Lindsey Hicks, Radvile Autukaite, Will Sims and Kendall Dillard, while one player on that team also is currently on this staff in Taylor Soule.

Kentucky and Texas have already met once this season, just a little more than a month ago in Austin, Texas.

Despite Kentucky getting within one-possession under the five-minute mark in the fourth quarter at Texas in the Moody Center on Feb. 9, UK took a 64-53 loss.

It was the second time a team has held the Longhorns to as few points at home in their previous 52 games. Meanwhile, it was the fewest points any team has held the Horns all season at home or on the road, while it was 23.8 points below their fourth-in-the-nation scoring offense at the time (87.8).

UK allowed UT to shoot 61.5 percent in the first half but then held UT to 27.3 percent (6-of-22) in the second half. UK also narrowly outrebounded UT, 30-29, in the early meeting.

Saturday’s game will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the Wildcats and the Longhorns (1978, 2007, 2025, 2x 2026). Kentucky trails Texas, 4-0, in the all-time series, including trailing, 2-0, on a neutral court. The two teams have never met in the NCAA Championship but they have met in the postseason – the 1978 WNIT.

The Wildcats bring one of the top point guards in the nation and one of the top centers in the nation to the rematch, including Tonie Morgan – a Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Top Five Finalist– and Clara Strack – Lisa Leslie Center of the Year Top Five Finalist. Morgan is leading the nation in total assists (279) and second in assists per game (7.97), while Strack ranks top 25 in blocks (2.6), rebounds (10.3) and double-doubles (16).

UK also has the Splash Cats, becoming the first team in Southeastern Conference history to have two players with at least 94 3s in the same season in Amelia Hassett (98) and Aisa Boone (94).
