More families seeking birth and postpartum services in KY

More insurers are offering doula coverage as new moms seek out professionals who provide prenatal planning, comfort during labor, and postpartum support.

Jessie Powell, owner of Doulas of Kentuckiana, said research over the last few years has shown growing awareness of the benefits of doulas and made the profession more mainstream. She believes doulas ultimately help a person achieve their best birth experience.

"We just make sure, as doulas, that our clients have the opportunity to really talk through individualized situations and then make the decision that's best for their families," Powell explained. "It's not just for someone that doesn't want an epidural or wants a more holistic birth."

Research shows doula services have been linked to a lower risk of C-sections, higher birth weights, and a lower risk of premature labor.

Dr. Lisa Saul, national medical director of women’s health for UnitedHealthcare, said reducing complications during a pregnancy can help avoid the worst outcomes.

"With the United States having the highest maternal mortality rate, as well as maternal morbidity rate, among high-income countries, we know that most of these deaths and most of these scenarios are considered to be preventable," Saul pointed out.

Saul noted UnitedHealthcare members may have coverage for a set number of visits or a reimbursement allowance for doula support services.
